We plan the location of the cross member, assist the fabricator with setting up and install the completed member and rack for no charge. What do I need to take into consideration before purchasing a Gripsport rack?
Weight
The weight of the rack plus bikes will effect pretty much everything with your vehicle and van. For example, a 2 bike rack weighs 16kg and the bolt on mount 13kg. Add two bikes and all of a sudden you have an extra 50-60kg up front.
Check all of your van and vehicle weights including TBM (Tow Ball Mass), GTM (Gross Trailer Mass), GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) and GCM (Gross Combined Mass).

Enough room?
Many vans have extended draw bars these days so fitting extras is usually a fairly simple task, however if your draw bar is short you may find that fitting just 2 bikes maybe a squeeze. You will need to take into consideration whether the bike nearest your tow vehicle will be impacted when doing a tight turn. If you are attempting to mount a 3 or 4 bike model it is important to account for the distance between the bike closest to the caravan and the bike closest to the towing vehicle. If the bike furthest from the caravan ends up less than 850mm away from the rear of the vehicle, your turning circle may be slightly affected and we recommend a 'spotter' be present when jack-knifing or turning sharply. Warning - direct welding to draw bar
If you choose to direct weld the cross member to your draw bar ensure that the house batteries are disconnected as welding may affect electrical components in your van. Galvanising will have to be removed, also double check if you have internal wiring running through your drawbar, extreme heat from welding may cause the wire coating to melt causing an electrical short. This is one of the main reasons Gripsport recommend utilising the supplied saddles which also makes the cross member removable. Also check with your van manufacturer as direct welding may also void your warranty.
Cross members can be direct welded but you need to take precaustions.

A quick video (above) of the process to fit a cross member for the Gripsport van racks. Set out is important as you need to be certain that the saddles, post, mount and tilting mechanism all need to have clearance. Once the position on the drawbar is sorted, the cut angle is measured with a bevel and the cross member is cut to length. Once the cuts are cleaned up, the new cross member can be checked for fit, sometimes drawbars aren’t plumb so at times adjustments have to be made. The 100x50x3 or 75x50x3 rectangular hollow section (RHS) is then set onto the saddles and tack welded. A quick check on the drawbar to check for fit, then another couple of tacks, check again, if all good is then completed with a full weld. A quick paint, then the cross member is bolted into position. Once this is in the Gripsport mount simply bolts onto the cross member and the rack is fitted onto its horizontal rail. Job done. The whole process usually takes less than 1 hour.

THE PROBLEM:Not all bikes have a “top tube”… but most bike racks need a “top tube” in order to do their job.
Which means that if you happen to ride a “step-through” (with no top tube whatsoever), a traditional “ladies” bike, or indeed any other style of bike with a very low or sweeping top tube, you’re going to need one of these.

Set & Forget bike positioning.
Gripsport's Set & Forget Bike Positioning uses a wheel “hoop” for the front wheel, but instead of another “hoop” for the back wheel (forcing you to alter the spacing between the hoops every time you want to carry a different size bike), the back wheel simply sits down into the “taco” shaped channel… which means you can load up any size bike from a BMX to the largest road or mountain bike in seconds and without having to re-setup your carrier for a shorter (or longer) bike.
Each “taco” shaped wheel channel is supplied with its own heavy-duty cinch strap. For extreme driving situations, or when carrying bikes with very wide tyres, we recommend strapping the rear wheel down into the taco channel.
